I think I am about done with cold showers everyday. This stretch without power has been challenging for sure. However, it does look like the Hydro team has got ahead of themselves. They are saying that power may be restored to the Bamfield area by early next week. Fingers crossed.
The fish, however, don’t seem too worried about the power outage thank goodness. They have arrived in force. Fishing is on fi..! (I am not going to say it! Too easy and too soon). Let’s just say the fishing around Barkley Sound has lit up!
The road through Lake Cowichan and Youbou is operational and not an issue if you take your time. Bamfield is open and wants your business. Being shut down mid August is a financial disaster. This town thrives on August. This is where local folks make it. So come. Stay at one of the lodges, Go eat dinner at Flora’s and the Wreckage. They need you and your business.
On to the fishing.
Right now it’s kind of like – go anywhere, drop anything and fish hard. Ok maybe not quite as easy as that but it’s close.
I have now switched over to bait. I know some folks are still having success with glow white hoochies which is awesome to hear as bait isn’t cheap. For me, bait has been the ticket. Hot spots have been the Wall, Swale, Fleming, Robbers Pass, and Whittlestone. I am fishing 40 to 55 feet deep with lime green glow flashers and glow white teaser heads. The bite has been steady early morning and comes on again at tide change.
Coho are also showing up in force. If you are going to target them go to glow white hoochies and troll 3mph. We’ve been into some 10 to 12 lbers. Fabulous fish!!
Hali fishing offshore is still productive but not quite as good as it has been. Sable fishing in 300 feet with 9 ounce jigs tipped with small pieces of salmon belly has been outstanding!
