As it does every year, things change. This time for sure, it is for the better. A week ago I had two days free to fish with the love of my life to get some fish for us. Not only is it a time we actually get a chance to get our own fish but it’s time on the water I cherish with her. We talk, we laugh, she does a very goofy fish dance, it’s time we get to spend together that I never get enough of. So we spent 18 hours between last Monday and Tuesday fishing and we managed 1 spring and 3 coho.
It was not a banner day or two days on the water but boy did I ever enjoy it…
The good news is I believe the drought is over. Things really picked up last weekend during the Bamfield Fireman’s Derby. I believe they weighed in over 700 fish! That’s not a bad turn around from earlier in the week.
So here ‘s the deal. Edward King, Kirby, Ohiat, Flemming, the Wall, and Beale have all produced fish. I am having the most success running glow white flash flies at 49 – 57 feet on one rigger and rolling anchovies on the other side at similar depths. There has been a ton of coho around to round out your catch. The coho have been averaging 6 – 8 pounds with a surprising number pushing double digits. Gorgeous fish indeed!
Hali fishing continues to be absolute;y stellar! Salmon bellies, extra larger herring and mackerel have been solid producers when targeting white BC gold. Find a pinnacle or hump that rises off the bank offshore. Fish in and around it and you will be rewarded with flatty gold.
