Fishing report July 21 2025 – It’s Hoochie Mama Time!

.

Hi All

It’s about blooming time! It seems that the algae bloom that has plagued Barkley Sound for the past two weeks is finally dissipating. I wouldn’t say it’s completely gone but it is definitely better water especially near the perimeter of the Sound. There were some slower days during the bloom but fish were still to be had if you put the time in. That said, fishing has certainly picked up the past few days.

Here is the skinny…It’s hoochie mama time folks. Hoochies are always a west coast standard but the past few days they are outfishing everything else it seems. Standard glow white hoochies and glow white flashflys have been incredibly productive as of late.

I’ve been dragging lines around Beale and Little Beale at 44 and 49 feet on the downrigger with great success. Other folks I know are fishing out a bit further than I am, and a bit deeper. But they too are having great results. White hoochies have also been a hit at Austin and Cree, Kirby, Edward King. Keep your leaders to a maximum of 36 inches and troll at speeds between 2.6 and 3.2 mph

28 pound Spring Salmon

Now don’t totally give up on spoons. Guests at the lodge are still bringing home quality fish using skinny gs. Irish cream is always a winner. Silver and blue skinny gs fished in the top 50 feet of the water column have been very effective. Keep your speed up as well, 2.8 to 3.2.

Coho are showing up a bit more consistently and with a bit more size. Unfortunately I don’t have any secret spots to share with you as to where you can target them. They just show when they show. They are more than happy to take your chinook offerings when they do show.

Halibut fishing continues to be strong. Salmon bellies on spreader bars are the ticket.

We have also been having great success on 16 oz green paddle tail jigs. Tons of fun when you feel a hali hit with the rod in your hands!

We are in full summer mode here at Harbourside. The fishing has been very solid. The only thing we are missing is you! So get off the couch, grab your gear and get here asap!
